FUKUOKA (Kyodo) -- Yokozuna Terunofuji has withdrawn from the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament opening Sunday, marking his absence from two straight meets.
The grand champion's Isegahama stable made the decision Friday after his preparation was hampered by the knee pain and diabetes symptoms that saw him miss all of September's Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament.
The 10-time Emperor's Cup winner was not listed on the match schedule set for the opening two days at Fukuoka International Center and has effectively been ruled out of the entire 15-day meet.
"Appearing at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament (in January) will be his priority. He will work on that from now," stablemaster Isegahama said.
Terunofuji has only contested two full meets this year, the New Year tourney in Tokyo and July's Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament, winning both.
The Mongolian-born wrestler, sumo's only current yokozuna, also withdrew due to injury after initially taking part in the March and May tournaments following his ninth career title in January.
It will be the 12th time he has missed at least one day of a tournament in his 20 meets as a grand champion.
"We've let fans down by him being unable to fully participate throughout the year," Isegahama said.
With no yokozuna competing, the spotlight will be firmly on new ozeki Onosato, who was promoted to the second-highest rank after claiming his second Emperor's Cup in September.
The 24-year-old rising star became the fastest wrestler to reach ozeki since the start of the Showa era in 1926. He will face No. 1 maegashira Hiradoumi and Oho, respectively, on the first two days in Fukuoka.
