TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's Yuma Kagiyama defended his ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating's NHK Trophy men's title on Saturday, while compatriot Kaori Sakamoto, a three-time world champion, won the women's competition.
Kagiyama finished with a total of 300.09 points, finishing way ahead of Italian Daniel Grassl's 264.85 in second.
The Beijing Winter Olympics silver medalist and leader after Friday's short program, cruised to victory despite falling on his opening quad flip as he went on to score 194.39 in the free skate at Tokyo's Yoyogi National Stadium.
"I'm really frustrated," Kagiyama said about his early error. "But I nailed other quad jumps, as well as a (triple) flip-toe loop combination, so I'm happy with those."
"Managing to regroup after the mistake is a testament to my mental growth...I was aiming to get 300 points, but I didn't get it in the way I was planning to. I want to get it mistake-free next time."
Grassl rose from fifth in the short program to second overall, while Japan's Tatsuya Tsuboi was third in both segments to finish third with 251.52 as he secured his first podium finish on the circuit.
Andrew Torgashev of the United States was fourth, and Italian Matteo Rizzo was fifth, while Japan's Kao Miura, who was second in the short program, settled for sixth overall, dragged back by his free skate, which scored 11th in the 12-man field.
Sakamoto, who won last season's Grand Prix Final and her previous Grand Prix meet this season, finished with a total of 231.88 points to lead a Japanese sweep of the women's podium ahead of runner-up Mone Chiba and Yuna Aoki.
"I was unusually calm tonight," Sakamoto said. "But while I was doing my makeup, I was watching the men skate on my TV and was screaming every time Tatsuya (Tsuboi) landed a quad."
"Aoki-san was in the dressing room next door, and afterward, she said I was really loud."
In pairs, Japan's Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara finished second both in the free skate and overall with a 209.45 total. They secured their berths at December's Grand Prix Final in France for the first time in two seasons.
Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava of Georgia won with 213.05. Ellie Kam and Danny O'Shea of the United States were third with 197.44.
