FUKUOKA (Kyodo) -- Rank-and-file wrestler Oho sprang the first big upset of the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament on Tuesday as he outmaneuvered ozeki Kotozakura in a battle between two of the sport's thoroughbreds.
No. 1 maegashira Oho, the grandson of former yokozuna Taiho, opened his account on Day 3 at Fukuoka Kokusai Center by pushing out Kotozakura, who fights under the same ring name as his own former yokozuna grandfather.
Following a mighty collision, Kotozakura (2-1) briefly gained a belt grip before Oho (1-2) broke the hold and shoved the ozeki over the straw bales with a hand to the face and a forearm to the chest.
It was Oho's second straight win over Kotozakura, who maintains a 4-2 edge in their head-to-head rivalry.
"I was determined and felt confident. I've gotten some good practice and it's geared me up well for the tournament," said Oho, aiming for his first promotion to the three "sanyaku" ranks below yokozuna.
The September champion, new ozeki Onosato, stayed perfect at 3-0 with an overwhelming push-out victory against komusubi Shodai (0-3).
With sole yokozuna Terunofuji once again out with health problems, the 24-year-old Onosato has become the main attraction at the 15-day tournament following his promotion to ozeki at the fastest pace on record since the beginning of the Showa era in 1926.
Ozeki Hoshoryu (3-0) swiftly took care of No. 1 maegashira Hiradoumi (0-3) despite a momentary stumble at the opening collision. Unable to secure a belt grip, the Mongolian grappler barged his opponent to the outside and pushed him over the edge.
Sekiwake Kirishima (0-3) remained unable to open his account at the tournament as he was pushed out by No. 3 maegashira Abi. After successive false starts, it was former sekiwake Abi (2-1) who gained the upper hand and shoved the former ozeki off the dohyo.
No. 3 maegashira Atamifuji (3-0) continued his impressive start by pushing out sekiwake Daieisho (1-2). The promising youngster from Shizuoka Prefecture is also aiming for his first sanyaku promotion.
