JAKARTA (Kyodo) -- Japan overpowered Indonesia 4-0 away Friday to move seven points clear at the top of Group C in the 2026 World Cup Asian final-round qualifiers.
Koki Ogawa forced Justin Hubner into netting a 35th-minute own goal and Takumi Minamino drilled in a fine second five minutes later after the Samurai Blue came through a tricky start in the rain at Jakarta's Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
Hidemasa Morita scored four minutes after the break and substitute Yukinari Sugawara blasted in the 69th-minute fourth as Hajime Moriyasu's men seized their fourth win from five games, moving up to 13 points.
Australia, Saudi Arabia and China, who Japan will next face away on Tuesday, sit on six points, Bahrain five and winless Indonesia three, with the top two sides winning automatic qualification.
"We were scoring goals, but Indonesia had a wonderful start to the match and we wanted to stem that tide, as well as exploit the space they left," Sugawara said. "I wasn't in the starting lineup again and felt some frustration, but that emotion is driving me on too. I wanted to leave my mark today."
Indonesia had a huge chance in the ninth minute when Ko Itakura failed to deal with an innocuous-looking long ball that bounced off the bumpy pitch. Forward Ragnar Oratmangoen had a clear run at goal from the halfway line but spurned the precious chance as Zion Suzuki saved a one-on-one.
The home side also produced promising attacks down both channels, but clinical Japan broke the deadlock after a tidy buildup saw left-sided defender Koki Machida find Morita in the box. His layoff released Daichi Kamada, and under pressure from Ogawa, Hubner kicked the square ball into his own net.
Minamino doubled the lead four minutes later after Kamada found Kaoru Mitoma. The left wing-back quickly played the pass into the box and the Monaco attacker hit an immaculate first-time shot with his left foot that went in off the foot of the near post.
Japan were gifted the third goal when keeper Maarten Paes passed straight to Morita. His low shot from inside the area should have been blocked, but defender Jay Idzes totally missed the ball and it rolled inside the far corner.
Calvin Verdonk flashed a shot wide off a 54th-minute corner for Indonesia before Sugawara joined the scoresheet with a sumptuous close-range finish from a tight angle after the right wing-back burst into the box via a one-on-one with his fellow substitute Junya Ito.
