Tokyo stocks open higher on firm tech shares, bargain-hunting

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Tuesday as technology issues tracked overnight gains by their U.S. counterparts and investors scooped up bargains after recent declines.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 199.87 points, or 0.52 percent, from Monday to 38,420.72. The broader Topix index was up 16.46 points, or 0.61 percent, at 2,708.22.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by precision instrument, transportation equipment and mining shares.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 154.60-61 yen compared with 154.65-75 yen in New York and 154.56-58 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Monday.
The euro was quoted at $1.0593-0597 and 163.77-84 yen against $1.0593-0603 and 163.78-88 yen in New York, and $1.0547-0548 and 163.02-06 yen in Tokyo late Monday afternoon.
