Speed skating: Miho Takagi, Yukino Yoshida prevail at World Cup opener in Nagano

NAGANO, Japan (Kyodo) -- Japan's Miho Takagi won the women's 1,500 meters and compatriot Yukino Yoshida secured her first victory in the 500 at the speed skating World Cup opener in Nagano on Friday.
World record holder and Beijing Olympic 1,500 silver medalist Takagi logged 1 minute, 55.02 seconds at the M-Wave arena to finish 0.16 ahead of Han Mei of China, with Joy Beune of the Netherlands in third.
The victory was the 30-year-old Takagi's 30th in World Cup competition across all distances.
In the 500, Yoshida clocked her personal best of 37.74 for her maiden title, finishing ahead of Andzelika Wojcik of Poland, who was 0.18 back, and Kim Min Sun of South Korea in third.
The 21-year-old Yoshida became the first Japanese winner in the distance since Nao Kodaira back in November 2021.
In the men's 500, Jordan Stolz of the United States won in 34.43, with Laurent Dubreuil of Canada second and Japan's Tatsuya Shinhama filling out the podium. Stolz also won the 1,500.
Nagano Prefecture is hosting a World Cup event for the first time since 2019.
