NAGANO (Kyodo) -- American Jordan Stolz pipped Japan's Tatsuya Shinhama to win his second men's 500 meters title at the World Cup season-opening meet Sunday in Nagano and sweep all four of his races over the three days of competition.
Stolz, who had won the 500, 1,000 and 1,500 titles at the meet opening Friday, clocked 34.41 seconds at M-Wave to see off Shinhama by 0.08. Merijn Scheperkamp of the Netherlands was a further 0.24 behind in third.
The 28-year-old Shinhama, who was third in the first 500 race on Friday, once again logged a strong time but finished narrowly behind the 20-year-old Stolz.
"It's a worthwhile challenge," Shinhama said of his rivalry with the American. "Everyone is battling against Stolz. He's giving me really good motivation."
In the women's team pursuit, the Japanese trio of Miho Takagi, Momoka Horikawa and Ayano Sato clocked 2:58.12 to take silver 1.32 seconds behind the Netherlands, with the United States third.
