Tokyo stocks open higher on Wall St. gains

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Monday as sentiment was lifted by advances on Wall Street late last week.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 454.63 points, or 1.19 percent, from Friday to 38,738.48. The broader Topix index was up 20.68 points, or 0.77 percent, at 2,717.21.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by precision instrument, land transportation and machinery issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 154.15-16 yen compared with 154.75-85 yen in New York and 154.72-74 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Friday.
The euro was quoted at $1.0478-0482 and 161.52-59 yen against $1.0418-0428 and 161.23-33 yen in New York and $1.0486-0487 and 162.25-29 yen in Tokyo late Friday afternoon.
