NAPLES, Florida (Kyodo) -- The U.S.-based LPGA Tour named Japan's Ayaka Furue as the winner of the Vare Trophy for scoring average and Mao Saigo as the Rookie of the Year after the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship concluded Sunday.
Thailand's Jeeno Thitikul won the tournament and claimed the record-setting $4 million first-place check after shooting a 7-under 65 in the final round at the Tiburon Golf Club for a 22-under 266 total, one clear of Angel Yin of the United States.
It was the 21-year-old Thai's fourth career victory and second of the season.
Furue became the first Japanese to win the Vare Trophy for recording the season's lowest scoring average of 69.988 after a final-round 68 left her in a tie for eighth at 13-under.
"I'm so honored to be the first Japanese player to win this trophy," Furue said. "I wanted to shoot something below 70, so I'm glad to achieve it."
Saigo was the second Rookie of the Year from Japan and first since Hiromi Kobayashi in 1990. She finished tied for 25th at 8-under after a 66.
