TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks were sharply higher Monday morning, with the Nikkei index briefly rising 2 percent, as sentiment was lifted by the record close of the Dow Jones index late last week.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 584.83 points, or 1.53 percent, from Friday to 38,868.68. The broader Topix index was up 27.61 points, or 1.02 percent, at 2,724.14.
The U.S. dollar weakened to the upper 153 yen range after news that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will nominate longtime hedge fund manager Scott Bessent as treasury secretary, raising speculation that future monetary policy could weaken the dollar.
At noon, the dollar fetched 153.76-78 yen compared with 154.75-85 yen in New York and 154.72-74 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Friday.
The euro was quoted at $1.0487-0488 and 161.25-28 yen against $1.0418-0428 and 161.23-33 yen in New York and $1.0486-0487 and 162.25-29 yen in Tokyo late Friday afternoon.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average's close at an all-time high on Friday helped push the Nikkei index up over 700 points to above the 39,000 line at one stage.
Markets were also supported by a pause in the recent increase of the yield on the benchmark 10-year Japanese government bond, as well as rise in U.S. stock futures, brokers said.
