TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Takumi Kanaya came from behind to grab his first JGTO money title by finishing third in the Japan tour's season-ending Nihon Series JT Cup on Sunday.
The 26-year-old started the season's final event in second place among six golfers with a shot at the earnings crown.
Kanaya shot a final-round three-under-par 67, carding four birdies and an eagle against three bogeys, the last on No. 18 at Tokyo Yomiuri Country Club in the capital's suburbs.
"It was really tough. On the final day, the 18th hole was the longest I'd ever played. But my mother came from Hiroshima to cheer me on, and I was able to play exactly the way I'm supposed to," Kanaya said.
"Right until the very end, I was concentrating on each and every shot."
In 2015, as a 17-year-old high schooler, Kanaya became Japan's youngest amateur championship winner. He became the fourth amateur to win a Japan men's tour event in 2019, as a university student.
South African Shaun Norris shot a final-round 68 for a four-day total of 12-under-par 268, and a two-stroke win over Naoyuki Kataoka, with Kanayama a stroke further back.
