GRENOBLE, France (Kyodo) -- Japan's Yuma Kagiyama outscored Ilia Malinin of the United States in the free skate but finished second overall behind the "Quad God" at figure skating's Grand Prix Final on Saturday.

Malinin won his second consecutive Grand Prix Final title with a total of 292.12 points, 10.34 ahead of Kagiyama. Japanese compatriot Shun Sato moved up one spot to round out the podium with 270.82 in Grenoble, France.

In the free skate, Kagiyama outpointed Malinin 188.29 to 186.69.

"I wanted to challenge myself with my technical ability as well as try to incorporate the artistry that I've been working on through the past few seasons," the 20-year-old Malinin said via the International Skating Union's official website.

"It was not what I wanted but I am still proud of myself. I try to create something new even though at the very beginning it can look weird and unsure. The biggest challenge is to try to make everything consistent and as clean as possible and to put technical aspects and artistry together."

Earlier in the day, Amber Glenn of the United States won the women's crown in her first Grand Prix Final, holding off comebacks by Mone Chiba and reigning world champion Kaori Sakamoto.

Glenn scored 142.03 points to finish with a total of 212.07 in the elite field of six, five of them Japanese. The 25-year-old from Plano, Texas, placed first in both the short and free programs.

Chiba took silver with 208.85, while Sakamoto moved up one spot to claim bronze with 201.13.

"I'm certainly happy but wanted to come in second with a better performance," Chiba said. "I have to aim higher."
