KADOMA, Osaka (Kyodo) -- Beijing Olympics men's silver medalist Yuma Kagiyama and three-time defending women's world champion Kaori Sakamoto won Friday's short programs on the first day of the national figure skating championships.
The 21-year-old Kagiyama, who finished second at the Grand Prix Final behind U.S. "Quad God" Ilia Malinin earlier this month, scored 92.05 points, 1.74 ahead of second-place Rio Nakata, 16.
Kazuki Tomono placed third with 89.72 at Towa Pharmaceutical RACTAB Dome in Kadoma, Osaka Prefecture. The men's competition will wrap up with their free skate Saturday.
Nobunari Oda, making his first appearance at the national championships in 11 years before retiring at the end of this season at age 37, was fifth, followed in sixth by Grand Prix Final bronze medalist Shun Sato.
Sakamoto, looking for her fourth consecutive national title, scored 78.92 points, while 16-year-old Mao Shimada was runner-up with 75.58. Mone Chiba, second at last year's nationals, was third with 74.72.
The three men and three women to represent Japan in the individual events at the world championships in March in Boston will be selected after the nationals conclude with the women's free skate on Sunday.
