OSAKA -- Tomiko Itooka, recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest living person, died on Dec. 29, 2024, in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, at age 116, the municipal government announced on Jan. 4.
She died from natural causes, and a private funeral was held with close relatives.
Itooka was born on May 23, 1908. She became the world's oldest person after the previous record holder, who lived in Spain, died in August 2024 at the age of 117.
At the special nursing home in the city where she resided, she enjoyed drinking her favorite lactic acid beverages and often said "Thank you" to the staff.
Ashiya Mayor Ryosuke Takashima commented, "Through her long life, she gave us great courage and hope. I express my deepest condolences."
