TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya said on Friday that he will visit South Korea, the Philippines and Palau next week in a bid to reaffirm bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
The four-day trip from Monday comes ahead of the inauguration on Jan. 20 of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, known for his aversion to multilateralism.
It will be Iwaya's first visit to any of the three nations since he took up the current post in October. The minister told a press conference that he will meet with his South Korean and Philippine counterparts, Cho Tae Yul and Enrique Manalo.
Iwaya said he will reaffirm cooperation to maintain the trilateral collaborative frameworks between Japan, the United States, and, respectively, South Korea and the Philippines, which have been strengthened under Joe Biden's administration.
During his first four-year tenure through 2021, Trump preferred bilateral approaches.
Iwaya said Japan and South Korea will continue with projects marking the 60th anniversary of the normalization of their ties this year, despite the political turmoil in Seoul following President Yoon Suk Yeol's brief martial law order in early December.
Yoon's decision prompted opposition parties to submit impeachment motions against him, one of which was passed by the nation's parliament on Dec. 14, suspending his presidential duties.
In Palau, a Pacific island state that is a diplomatic ally of Taiwan, Iwaya is set to attend the inaugural ceremony for pro-U.S. President Surangel Whipps, who secured a second four-year term in November.
