SHIRAKAWA, Gifu -- An illumination event at a UNESCO World Heritage-listed settlement in this central Japan village began on Jan. 13, lighting up historic thatched houses.
Tourists in the Shirakawa-go settlement were left breathless by the enchanting scene that unfolded in the snow-covered landscape.
This is the 39th edition of the winter tradition. When 108 lights were turned on at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 13, 32 houses with steeply pitched thatched roofs, including the national important cultural property Wada House, appeared between the contrast of the pitch-black darkness and the white snow.
The light-up event will also take place between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 19, 26 and Feb. 2. To alleviate congestion and ensure safety, entry to the area is by reservation only, and tickets are required. For more information, visit the Shirakawa-go light-up committee office website or call 05769-6-1013 (in Japanese).
