Sumo: Grand champion Terunofuji retires after injury-plagued career

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Mongolian-born grand champion Terunofuji has decided to retire, the Japan Sumo Association said Friday.
The injury-plagued 33-year-old, a 10-time champion in the top-tier makuuchi division, withdrew from the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo on Thursday a day after losing his fourth-day bout against Tobizaru.
Terunofuji completed just two out of six tournaments in 2024, winning the Emperor's Cup on both occasions, as he dealt with a host of health problems, including chronic knee pain and diabetes.
After reaching sumo's top rank in 2021, Terunofuji missed all or part of 13 meets out of 21.
