IWATA, Shizuoka (Kyodo) -- Shizuoka Blue Revs first-year scrumhalf Shuntaro Kitamura showed a knack for finding space with a pair of early tries in a 34-28 Japan Rugby League One victory Saturday over previously unbeaten Brave Lupus Tokyo.
The visitors took a fourth-minute lead when a big run by Shannon Frizell set up Richie Mo'unga for the opening try at Yamaha Stadium, before Kitamura's sense for space paid dividends.
With the Brave Lupus defense looking for the Blue Revs youngster with four games under his belt to pass the ball, he simply sprinted across the whitewash for his third try of the season.
The 22-year-old's superb offload set up Valynce Te Whare to cross and give the hosts a 20th-minute 10-7 lead. Five minutes later, Kitamura picked the ball up from a ruck and easily scooted across for his second try.
Frizell scored an impressive try that was converted to keep the scores close at the half with Shizuoka leading 17-14.
A pair of Blue Revs tries from rolling mauls by Takeshi Hino and Te Whare, and a third by Charles Piutau gave the hosts a commanding 34-14 lead that the visitors could only chip away at.
Young Blue Revs flyhalf Kenta Iemura completed a poor day with the boot by missing a short penalty goal after the final hooter.
With both teams boasting 4-1 records, the missed goal gave the visitors a bonus point that allowed them to stay one point ahead of the Blue Revs after five rounds.
Brave Lupus Tokyo are in second on 18 points, one back of Saitama Wild Knights, who play Sunday.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Yokohama Eagles scored seven tries in a 47-21 win over Sagamihara Dynaboars to move one point back of the Blue Revs, while Bernard Foley kicked 11 points as Kubota Spears beat Black Rams Tokyo 26-18 to sit a point further back in fifth place.
