BIRMINGHAM, England (Kyodo) -- Japan midfielder Reo Hatate had an assist Wednesday as playoff-bound Celtic lost 4-2 away to Aston Villa in the final round of the Champions League preliminary stage.
The Scottish Champions finished 21st in the league phase to advance as one of the top 24 teams, but they now face a daunting knockout-phase playoff against either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich over two legs in mid-February for a place in the last 16.
Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers scored twice in the first five minutes before Adam Idah brought Celtic level with a brace of his own, heading home in the 36th minute and netting again two minutes later off Hatate's pass from the right.
Ollie Watkins swept in on the hour mark at Villa Park before missing a penalty for the home side, who sealed the win -- and an automatic berth in the last-16 as eighth-place finishers -- when Rogers completed his hat-trick in stoppage time.
"It would have been better if we could get another goal in the first half," said Hatate, who was unfazed about who Celtic play next. "It's all about what we can do to get the result. We'll focus on the things we can do."
Japan captain Wataru Endo made his first-ever Champions League start as part of a youthful Liverpool side who finished on top of the league phase despite relinquishing their perfect record with a 3-2 loss away to PSV Eindhoven.
Starting in midfield, Endo's long ball led to Harvey Elliott's goal that gave the visitors a 40th-minute lead at 2-1, but his mistake led to Ismael Saibari equalizing five minutes later, with Ricardo Pepi subsequently squeezing in the winner in first-half stoppage time.
Takumi Minamino featured in attack for Monaco as they lost 3-0 at Inter Milan to finish 17th, pairing them against either Paris Saint-Germain or Benfica in the playoffs.
Forward Ayase Ueda could not find the net as Feyenoord were hammered 6-1 at Lille to place 19th, with AC Milan or PSV awaiting them in the playoffs.
Sporting CP, without midfielder Hidemasa Morita on the night, snatched a 1-1 draw at home against Bologna to finish 23rd and sneak into the playoffs, where Atalanta or Borussia Dortmund await.
