YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) -- Yokohama F Marinos reached the quarterfinals of the Asian Champions League Elite football tournament Tuesday, defeating Shanghai Port 4-1 in the second leg at home for a 5-1 aggregate win.
Brazilian forward Anderson Lopes bagged a brace, scoring the J-League club's second and fourth goals of the night at Nissan Stadium in Yokohama.
Daiya Tono opened the scoring just two minutes into the match for Marinos, and Lopes doubled the lead in the 29th minute.
Six minutes later, Leonardo pulled one back for the Chinese side, coached by former Marinos manager Kevin Muscat, following a corner.
But Yan Matheus's 44th-minute goal pushed Marinos' advantage back to two by halftime.
"We needed to stabilize the team after last year and conceding so many goals," Marinos manager Steve Holland said. "We are more stable, not perfect, but more stable."
"And then the next step was to add the attacking, which is coming now, you can see. Not just tonight, the previous two games also...We are moving in a good direction, but we still have a lot of work to do."
From the quarterfinals onward, all matches of the ACLE, Asia's top-tier club competition, will be played in Saudi Arabia between April 25 and May 3.
