TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks tumbled over 2 percent Friday morning as auto issues were hit by concerns over U.S. tariff policies and investors offloaded shares after securing dividend rights before the end of the fiscal year.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 788.31 points, or 2.09 percent, from Thursday to 37,011.66. The broader Topix index was down 61.64 points, or 2.19 percent, at 2,753.83.
The U.S. dollar was mostly firm in the upper 150 yen range in Tokyo after long-term U.S. Treasury yields rose overnight on speculation over a potential resurgence of inflation in the United States due to President Donald Trump's tariff plans.
At noon, the U.S. dollar fetched 150.82-83 yen compared with 151.00-10 yen in New York and 150.54-55 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Thursday.
The euro was quoted at $1.0792-0796 and 162.76-84 yen against $1.0797-0807 and 163.04-14 yen in New York and $1.0765-0766 and 162.06-10 yen in Tokyo late Thursday afternoon.
Stocks fell across the board, weighed down by concerns that Trump's upcoming additional 25 percent tariff on all automobiles would hurt the profits of Japanese automakers and cause a ripple effect on related industries like steel, brokers said.
Market jitters were further exacerbated by uncertainty over potential new tariff announcements next Wednesday on what Trump has dubbed "liberation day."
"A wave of tariff-related developments is expected, with details on scope and duration still unclear. This uncertainty raises doubts about the market's ability to absorb the impact, weighing on investor confidence," said Kazuo Kamitani, a strategist at the Investment Content Department of Nomura Securities Co.
The market was further pressured by selling in a wide range of issues after the deadline passed Thursday to become eligible for year-end dividend payments.
