ZAGREB (Kyodo) -- Japan's Kota Takahashi won the men's freestyle 74-kilogram category at the wrestling world championships on Monday for the first time.
The 22-year-old overpowered Paris Olympics bronze medalist and the world's top-ranked Chermen Valiev in the final in Zagreb, taking an 8-2 lead in the second period before the Albanian withdrew with an injury.
"I'm left with a bit of a bad taste in the mouth (with his withdrawal), but I'm happy as the title came after I got to show my trademark tackle," 25th-ranked Takahashi said.
"The Olympic gold medal is what I'm aiming for. I'll stay humble and diligently continue to hone my tackle."
Takahashi is the second winner from Japan at the ongoing tournament in Croatia after Yoshinosuke Aoyagi won the men's freestyle 70 kg, which is a non-Olympic category, on Sunday.
Aoyagi has declared his intention to move up to 74 kg for an Olympic berth and is set to rival Takahashi.
