Japan convenience store sales rise slightly in April, up for 14th month

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Convenience store sales in Japan edged up 0.01 percent from a year earlier in April for the 14th consecutive month of increase, supported by promotional campaigns, industry data said Wednesday.
Same-store sales at seven major convenience store operators totaled 944.97 billion yen ($5.9 billion), the Japan Franchise Association said.
Average spending per customer grew 1.6 percent to 740.9 yen as sales of fried food, self-service coffee and frozen meals were strong thanks to marketing measures such as bundle discounts and coupon offers.
The number of customer visits fell 1.5 percent to 1.28 billion, according to the association.
