SHIMONOSEKI, Yamaguchi -- Some 800 clear Edo-style wind chimes are filling the air with refreshing sounds during a summer festival at Kameyama Hachimangu shrine in this western Japan city.
This is the fourth edition of the "Fuurin Matsuri," or Wind Chime Festival, in the city's Nakanocho district. As in the previous year, the festival consists of three themed displays: the "Rainbow Corridor," featuring wind chimes in seven colors; the "Sea Corridor," with blue wind chimes inspired by the ocean; and the "Wave Corridor," featuring blue, light blue and clear wind chimes evoking an image of waves. Visitors can be seen looking up at the wind chimes, enjoying a brief sense of cool relief.
Chief Priest Nobuhiko Takenaka, 50, said, "I hope people will come to the shrine, hear the wind chimes and feel a sense of coolness."
Among visitors, a blue wind chime named "Kanmon Blue," priced at 3,000 yen (roughly $18), is especially popular. Takenaka recommends photographing the chime with the Kanmon Strait in the background. Admission is free. The festival runs through Sept. 6.
